Review for Marked (Servants of Fate, Book#1) by Sara Fine

Marked (Servants of Fate, #1)Marked by Sarah Fine
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I love futuristic, dystopian America novels. I think it’s just the abundance of coverage we see in our modern times, where global disaster appears to be imminent that makes me devour stories in this genre, like crazy. “Marked” is a wonderful addition to this brooding obsession of mine.

Plot: Based in Boston, many years into the future, after economic collapse and global changes that have turned Boston into a Venetian waterway; sprinkled with ancient Greek mythological veins, this story follows the Ferry Family- escorts to the afterlife, in a clever, fast-paced, detail-rich, action, romance, mystery- adventure. Whew, super run-on sentence, I know! But this book has it all. Ms. Fine has done a remarkable job combining so much of what I love to read. I like to escape my life and get swept into a story that engages my senses with a bit of intrigue; let me read about someone else’s family burdens, sexual tensions, and impending doom for a while, so I forget mine- ya know?

Characters: That’s what was accompanied with “Marked”. If you’ve ever read Sherrilyn Kenyon’s “League Series” (maybe her others do as well, but I haven’t read them yet), the books at the beginning of that series (I haven’t read past book #5) have a romantic subplot, mixed in nicely with the main conflict, and you have to get quite a ways into the story before the sexual tension that is almost unbearable, is consummated. Well, that sums up Cacy and Eli’s relationship (the two MCs), nicely. Both characters had developed backstories, and the supporting characters were given proper roles and purposes that made sense.

The Writing: The writing was flawless. There was no waste of space describing too much detail. “Marked” is told in 3rd person POV, alternating from Cacy and Eli’s viewpoint mostly, and then some of the minor characters.
In case you wanted to know: Yes, there are detailed sex scenes, some violence, but not nearly enough to be problematic. Again, think of S.K.’s League novels, and that’s about right where this novel lands. Violence too, but in the realm of supernatural creatures and events… so I’m not sure how that would be classified.

Overall: I chose “Marked” back in December 2014 as my 1st Reads choice. It’s been sitting in my Kindle since. The design of the cover had me assume it was a YA novel, which is fine, but I just was never in the mood to read it; based off of the synopsis. I am so glad I changed my mind and just read it anyways.

    Why do reviews?

Well, I own over 6000 books.
Most of them are non-fiction, since I have an obsession with knowledge.
But oh, how I love a good story.
I've decided to devote an entire Blog, just for books.

Here, you will find book reviews for Fiction, in almost every genre.
I'll also be sharing reviews for the too many to count
Nonfiction books I am constantly dumping into my head.
As well as Announcements etc. for New Releases
    from fellow authors.

How do I decide what rating...

For Fiction books, it's either a 5, 4, or a 3-star. That's it. If it doesn't qualify for at least a  3-star rating, I will NOT post that kind of a review. I either REALLY loved/liked it and it was written well, regardless if it wasn't something "up my alley" so-to-speak, OR it was okay, but could have used some more details, or fix the plot holes, etc. I WILL NOT rate low for spelling and/or grammar, editing mistakes. If they are plentiful, I will send the author a polite email to let them know. Hopefully the author will listen and address the problems.

For Nonfiction, sorry, but here I have to be a bit more discerning. I will rate 1-5 stars, according to the layout of the information, the quality of the information, as well as any editing mistakes, etc. I personally feel that a Nonfiction book is there to provide information, and if it is not delivered in a clear and concise manner, too much confusion will ensue and cause potentially horrible embarrassments or even fatal mistakes.
